Quick answer
BMI (body mass index) is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. For adults, the World Health Organization classes under 18.5 as underweight, 18.5–24.9 as a healthy weight, 25–29.9 as overweight and 30 or more as obese. A 70 kg adult who is 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 22.9.
What the BMI calculator does
This calculator gives your body mass index from your weight and height, the WHO category it falls into, and the weight range that would put you between a BMI of 18.5 and 24.9 at your height. Switch between metric (kg, cm) and imperial (lb, in) — the result is the same either way.
BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It is quick and needs no equipment, which is why doctors and public-health bodies use it, but it cannot tell muscle from fat or show where fat is stored. Use it alongside a waist measurement or a body fat estimate, and talk to a doctor or nurse before acting on it.
The adult categories here apply to people aged 18 and over. Children and teenagers are assessed with BMI-for-age percentiles instead, because healthy body proportions change as they grow.
The formula
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)² or BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)²
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| weight | Body weight, ideally measured in light clothing without shoes | kg or lb |
| height | Standing height without shoes | m (or cm ÷ 100) or in |
| 703 | Conversion factor that makes the imperial formula give the same number as the metric one | — |
The formula is the Quetelet index, introduced by Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s and adopted as "body mass index" in 1972. The healthy weight range shown is simply the formula run backwards: 18.5 × height² to 24.9 × height².
Two related figures are folded into this page: BMI Prime is your BMI divided by 25 (the top of the healthy range), so 1.00 is the upper limit and 1.20 means 20% above it; the ponderal index divides weight by height cubed (kg/m³) and is sometimes preferred for very tall or very short people because it scales better with height.
Worked examples
Healthy range, metric units
An adult who weighs 70 kg and is 175 cm tall.
Inputs
- UnitsMetric (kg, cm)
- Weight70
- Height175
Result
- BMI22.9
- CategoryHealthy weight
- Healthy weight range56.7 kg – 76.3 kg
- Distance from rangeWithin range
70 ÷ 1.75² = 22.9, comfortably inside the 18.5–24.9 band. At this height any weight from about 57 kg to 76 kg sits in the healthy range.
Just into overweight, imperial units
A 6 ft (72 in) adult who weighs 200 lb.
Inputs
- UnitsImperial (lb, in)
- Weight200
- Height72
Result
- BMI27.1
- CategoryOverweight
- Healthy weight range136.4 lb – 183.6 lb
- Distance from range16.4 lb over
703 × 200 ÷ 72² gives a BMI of about 27.1, in the overweight band. For a muscular person this may overstate body fat — a waist-to-height ratio is a useful cross-check.
Obese class I
An adult who weighs 95 kg and is 168 cm tall.
Inputs
- UnitsMetric (kg, cm)
- Weight95
- Height168
Result
- BMI33.7
- CategoryObese
- Healthy weight range52.2 kg – 70.3 kg
- Distance from range24.7 kg over
95 ÷ 1.68² = 33.7, in obese class I (30–34.9). The calculator shows how far above the healthy range this is, which is often a more useful target than the category label.
BMI categories for adults
These are the World Health Organization's adult categories, used by the NHS and the US CDC. Some health services use lower cut-offs for people of South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean background, because the same BMI is linked with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes in these groups: in UK NICE guidance, 23 marks the start of overweight and 27.5 the start of obesity.
| BMI | Category | BMI Prime |
|---|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight | Below 0.74 |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Healthy weight | 0.74 – 1.00 |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight | 1.00 – 1.20 |
| 30.0 – 34.9 | Obese class I | 1.20 – 1.40 |
| 35.0 – 39.9 | Obese class II | 1.40 – 1.60 |
| 40.0 and above | Obese class III | 1.60 and above |
When BMI is misleading
- Muscular builds: athletes and people who lift weights can read as overweight or obese with low body fat, because muscle is denser than fat.
- Older adults: muscle mass falls with age, so a "healthy" BMI can hide a high body-fat percentage. Some guidance treats a BMI slightly above 25 as acceptable over 65.
- Pregnancy: BMI is not meaningful during pregnancy; use your pre-pregnancy weight when discussing weight gain with a midwife.
- Where fat sits: fat around the waist carries more health risk than fat on the hips. A waist measurement more than half your height is a common warning sign at any BMI.
- Children: use BMI-for-age charts, not these adult bands.
Measuring accurately
Weigh yourself first thing in the morning, after using the toilet and before eating, in light clothing. Measure height barefoot against a wall with your heels, back and head touching it, and mark the top of your head with a flat object such as a book. Small errors matter less than you might think: being 1 cm out on height changes BMI by roughly 0.3.
How to use the BMI Calculator
- 1Choose metric (kg and cm) or imperial (lb and inches).
- 2Enter your weight. For imperial, convert stones to pounds first (1 st = 14 lb).
- 3Enter your height without shoes — in inches for imperial (5 ft 9 in = 69 in).
- 4Read your BMI, its WHO category and the healthy weight range for your height.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI for an adult?
A BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is classed as healthy for most adults. If you are of South Asian, Chinese, Black African or African-Caribbean background, UK guidance suggests keeping below 23.
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Not very. BMI counts all weight the same, so heavily muscled people often score as overweight. A body fat estimate or waist-to-height ratio gives a better picture.
Is BMI different for men and women?
The adult formula and categories are the same for men and women. Women typically carry more body fat than men at the same BMI, which is one of the reasons BMI is only a screening tool.
How do I calculate BMI in pounds and inches?
Multiply your weight in pounds by 703, then divide by your height in inches squared. For 150 lb at 65 in: 703 × 150 ÷ 4,225 = 25.0.
What is BMI Prime?
BMI Prime is your BMI divided by 25, the upper limit of the healthy range. A value of 1.00 is exactly at the limit; 0.90 is 10% below it and 1.15 is 15% above.
Can I use this BMI calculator for children?
No. Children and teenagers need BMI-for-age percentiles, which compare them with others of the same age and sex. Ask a doctor or pediatrician, or use your country's official child BMI tool.
