Quick answer
In D&D 5e your level 1 hit points equal your hit die maximum plus your Constitution modifier. Each later level adds either the average of the hit die (rounded up) or a roll, plus the Con modifier again.
HP = die max + CON + (level − 1) × (avg die + CON)

Frequently asked questions
Should I roll or take average HP in 5e?
Average is safer and is the default in most games; rolling can beat it but a bad roll is permanent. Many DMs allow rerolling 1s and 2s as a compromise.
How does the Tough feat affect HP?
Tough adds 2 hit points per character level, and it keeps adding 2 for every level you gain afterwards.
Does Constitution apply retroactively?
Yes. If your Constitution modifier increases, you gain that amount of HP for every level you already have.
