Working
- 143560 / (20 x 20) = 109 per acre
Quick answer
Square layout: 43,560 divided by spacing squared. Triangular offset layout fits about 15% more trees in the same area.
The formula

How to use the Tree Spacing Calculator
- 1Enter the planting area in acres and the spacing between rows and trees.
- 2Use the mature canopy width as your minimum spacing for shade or fruit trees.
- 3Triangular offset rows fit more trees and shade the ground faster.
Frequently asked questions
How far apart should fruit trees be?
Dwarf 8 to 10 ft, semi-dwarf 12 to 15 ft, standard 20 to 25 ft. Closer than that and the canopies fight for light.
Why does triangular spacing fit more?
Offsetting each row by half a spacing packs circles more efficiently, adding roughly 15% more trees at the same distance apart.
