Quick answer
Swimming burn depends on stroke and effort more than distance. Each stroke has a MET value that is multiplied by weight and time.
kcal = METs x 3.5 x kg / 200 x minutes
How to use the Swimming Calorie Calculator
- 1Pick the stroke and effort that best matches most of your session.
- 2Enter total time in the water, your weight and the distance you covered.
- 3Use the per-100 m figure to compare sets and strokes fairly.

Frequently asked questions
Does rest between sets count?
Only partly. Enter moving time for the most accurate number, or enter total time and expect a slight overestimate.
Why is butterfly so much higher?
Butterfly has a MET value around 13.8 versus 8.3 for moderate freestyle, because it recruits far more muscle per stroke cycle.
