Working
- 1τ = 250 × 0.4 × sin(90°) = 100 N·m
Quick answer
Torque is force times the perpendicular lever arm distance; 1 N·m equals 0.7376 ft·lb.
τ = F × r × sin(θ)
How to use the Torque Calculator
- 1Enter the applied force in newtons.
- 2Enter the lever arm length in metres.
- 3Set the angle — 90° gives maximum torque.

Frequently asked questions
Why does angle matter?
Only the perpendicular component of force produces torque, so pulling at 30° gives half the torque of pulling square.
How do I convert N·m to ft·lb?
Multiply by 0.7376 — a 100 N·m wheel-nut spec is about 74 ft·lb.
