Working
- 1VO2 = 26.83 ml/kg/min, 7.67 METs
- 226.83 x 75 kg x 30 min / 1000 x 5 = 302 kcal
Quick answer
Incline walking burns far more than flat walking because vertical work adds oxygen cost. The ACSM equations convert speed and grade into VO2, then into calories.
walk VO2 = 3.5 + 0.1 x m/min + 1.8 x m/min x grade
How to use the Treadmill Incline Calorie Calculator
- 1Set the speed and incline exactly as shown on the treadmill console.
- 2Enter how long you walked or ran and your current body weight.
- 3Compare the incline result with the 0% figure to see what the hill is actually buying you.

Frequently asked questions
Why is this different from the treadmill's own readout?
Most consoles assume a default 70 kg user and ignore your real weight. This uses your weight and the published ACSM equations.
Does the equation switch for running?
Yes. At 8 km/h and above it uses the ACSM running equation, which has a different oxygen cost per metre.
