Quick answer

Ring size is set by the inside circumference of the band. In the US and Canada, size = (circumference in mm − 36.5) ÷ 2.55, so each whole size adds about 2.55 mm. European (ISO) sizes are simply the circumference in millimeters. A 54.4 mm circumference, or 17.3 mm inside diameter, is a US size 7 and roughly a UK N½.

What the Ring Size calculator does

This calculator converts a finger measurement or the inside diameter of a ring that already fits into US/Canadian, EU/ISO and approximate UK/Australian sizes. Enter millimeters; if your tape is in inches, convert with the length converter first (1 in = 25.4 mm).

Use it when buying a ring online, checking a size for a gift using a ring the person already wears, or comparing sizes from a jeweler in another country. Measuring an existing ring's inside diameter is usually more accurate than wrapping paper around a finger, because paper stretches and is hard to read to the nearest millimeter.

The US scale is a fixed formula, so its conversion is exact. UK letter sizes come from a separate British standard and the calculator gives the nearest letter, which can differ from a jeweler's chart by half a size. Wide bands, knuckles larger than the base of the finger and cold hands all affect fit, so treat the result as a starting point.

The formula

US size = (C − 36.5) ÷ 2.55 C = π × d EU / ISO size = C (in mm)

Formula variables
SymbolMeaningUnit
CInside circumference of the ring, or the circumference of your finger at the basemm
dInside diameter of a ring that fitsmm
36.5Circumference of a US size 0 ring (11.63 mm diameter)mm
2.55Circumference added per whole US size (0.032 in of diameter)mm

The US and Canadian scale starts at size 0 = 0.458 in (11.63 mm) inside diameter and adds 0.032 in of diameter per size, which is about 2.55 mm of circumference. ISO 8653 defines a ring size as the inside circumference in millimeters, which is what most of continental Europe uses. UK and Australian sizes use letters A–Z defined in British Standard BS 6820; half-letter steps are about 1.25 mm of circumference. To switch between diameter and circumference for other round objects, use the circle calculator.

Worked examples

Paper strip around the finger

A strip of paper wrapped around the base of the ring finger measures 54 mm to the overlap mark.

Inputs

  • Measurement54 mm
  • MeasuredInside circumference

Result

  • US / Canada size6.9
  • Inside circumference54 mm
  • Inside diameter17.19 mm
  • EU / ISO size54
  • UK / Australia (approx)N

54 mm is a US 6.9, so order a 7 (54.4 mm). Paper tends to read slightly small if pulled tight, which is another reason to round up rather than down.

Measuring a ring that already fits

You measure the inside diameter of a favorite ring with a ruler or calipers: 17 mm edge to edge.

Inputs

  • Measurement17 mm
  • MeasuredInside diameter

Result

  • US / Canada size6.6
  • Inside circumference53.4 mm
  • Inside diameter17 mm
  • EU / ISO size53.4
  • UK / Australia (approx)M

17 mm across is a 53.4 mm circumference, about US 6.6. That falls between 6½ and 7; choose 6½ for a thin band and 7 for a band wider than about 6 mm.

Larger men's size

A man's finger measures 62 mm around at the base, checked twice at different times of day.

Inputs

  • Measurement62 mm
  • MeasuredInside circumference

Result

  • US / Canada size10
  • Inside circumference62 mm
  • Inside diameter19.74 mm
  • EU / ISO size62
  • UK / Australia (approx)T

62 mm is exactly a US 10 and EU 62. If the knuckle is noticeably bigger than the base, measure the knuckle too and size for whichever is larger so the ring can still slide on.

Ring size chart: US, UK and EU in millimeters

US sizes and millimeter values below are calculated from the US formula. UK letters are the usual equivalents on jewelers' charts, which can vary by half a letter between retailers.

How to get an accurate finger measurement

  • Use non-stretch material: a thin strip of paper or string, laid flat, not twisted. A flexible tape measure is better still.
  • Measure at the base, then the knuckle: the ring must pass the knuckle, so if that measurement is larger, size between the two.
  • Warm hands, late in the day: fingers are smallest when cold and in the morning, and swell with heat, exercise, salty food and alcohol. Measure two or three times on different days.
  • Dominant hand is usually larger: by up to half a size, so measure the actual finger the ring will go on.
  • Read to the nearest millimeter: a 1 mm error in circumference is about 0.4 of a US size. A 1 mm error in diameter is over a full size, so measure diameters carefully.

Band width and comfort-fit rings

A wide band covers more of the finger and feels tighter than a thin one of the same size. Many jewelers suggest going up about half a size for bands of 6 mm or wider. Comfort-fit bands, which are rounded on the inside, feel slightly looser, so some people go down a quarter or half size. For an engagement ring meant as a surprise, err slightly large: resizing down is usually easier and cheaper than stretching a ring up.

How to use the Ring Size Calculator

  1. 1Measure the inside circumference of your finger at its base in millimeters, or the inside diameter of a ring that fits.
  2. 2Choose whether you measured the circumference or the diameter.
  3. 3Enter the measurement in mm (multiply inches by 25.4 if needed).
  4. 4Read the US size, EU size and nearest UK letter, and round up if you are between sizes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average ring size?

Jewelers commonly report about US 6 to 7 as typical for women and about US 9 to 10 for men. Fingers vary widely, so always measure rather than guessing from averages.

How do I convert ring size from mm to US size?

Subtract 36.5 from the inside circumference in millimeters and divide by 2.55. For 57 mm: (57 − 36.5) ÷ 2.55 = 8.0, a US size 8.

Is EU ring size the same as the circumference?

Yes. Under ISO 8653 a ring size is the inside circumference in millimeters, so an EU 54 ring measures 54 mm around the inside.

What if I'm between two ring sizes?

Choose the larger size, especially for wide bands or if your knuckles are big. A ring that is slightly loose can be fitted with a sizing bead; one that cannot pass the knuckle cannot be worn.

Can I use this for shoe sizes too?

No, shoes use a different system based on foot length. Use the shoe size converter for US, UK and EU shoe sizes.
